#KahunaLiving: Celebrating Life

We believe that life is best celebrated with fun and adventures. Here in La Union, many fun activities are a must-tries when you visit! One of the crowd favorites is surfing the famous waves of San Juan beach. Something you shouldn’t miss! But did you know that there are many other sports you can participate in when at the beach?

Another fun activity to try is beach football. Beach football, also known as beach soccer, is a variant of association football played on a beach or some form of sand. While it’s not your regular beach activity, it still doesn’t make it less fun. What makes this sport more interesting is knowing that there are people dedicated to training and teaching this sport to little kids.

Meet Surfers FC

Surfers FC or Surfers Football Club was founded by Roy Fuller. He and his team have been playing this sport for around 5 years already. Beach football is not a typical sport that many find interesting that’s why he decided to give it a try. His environment made it a perfect place for him and his team to execute the game. Although La Union is known for surfing, beach football was still a sport people can actively enjoy by the beach. They named their club Surfers FC to tie it with their traditional sport, surfing.

There was a sense of excitement and joy that sparked him when he first started to play it. But what he liked the most about the sport was the bond that he was able to create with his team. “It’s not only about winning a game. It’s all about the lesson we get to bring in our homes after every match together with my teammates,” says Roy. They kept ongoing. They kept on playing. That’s why even when they started as a small team, they began to grow because it attracted more kids to learn about beach football. Building and growing the team continues to encourage Roy and his teammates because they found people that walked with them throughout the process of learning together.

He said it. Having a team that will walk with you is essential. And having a team means having to take care of each other. The pandemic hit them the same way all of us did. That’s why they had to prioritize the health of their teammates and follow protocols given by the LGU. Training and games became limited and their routines were adjusted. But they grab every opportunity they get to play with each other and stay connected to their community.

Goal: Keep Going

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, they kept going. They did not allow the crisis to stop them from fulfilling their dreams. Seeing the next generation filled with hope to dream big inspires Roy the most and encourages him to provide them a sport that will not only bring fun but teach them life lessons. He wants them to learn how to accept failure—because it’s not always about winning, and to always keep going. He says that “It’s not always about striking for a goal. You need to fall first to learn how to win.”

Celebrating Life

This inspired Kahuna Resort to keep going and celebrate life. Because #KahunaLiving celebrates life, Kahuna Resort decided to support Surfers FC through a sponsorship. We believe in Surfers FC, and we believe in its impact on the next generation. Supporting them through sponsorships has become a way for them to provide Jerseys and meals for their Summer Camp. The camp was a great way to encourage little kids to be more active, stay away from their screens, learn a new sport, and join a great community.

Celebrating life does not have to be complicated. It can be seen in the mundane things we do and in our support for causes such as this. Join us in the #KahunaLiving to help reach more people like Roy and be inspired for more stories like the journey of Surfer FC.
