#KahunaLiving: Surfing the Waves of La Union

What do you imagine when you hear La Union?

Do you think of its exquisite coastline? Do you feel the cool breeze of the beach? Do you hear the crashing waves? Or do you imagine surfing and riding the waves?

Cause I do! ✋ No wonder San Juan, La Union is considered as the Surfing Capital of the North. The name itself already brings you to a sensational ride and adventure of surfing!

Why La Union?

The Philippines has many natural resources, bountiful surroundings, and numerous islands and oceans we can enjoy. It’s a given that wherever you are from, you can enjoy the wonders of nature around you.

San Juan, La Union is known as the Surfing Capital of the North. This makes it the best and most accessible place for people from Metro Manila and around Luzon who need a quick getaway. No need to book flights (which we know can be quite frustrating at this time)!

You can reach San Juan, La Union via car, van, or even a bus! Travelers can even try booking through the Partas bus terminal in Pasay and Cubao. These buses can take you directly to San Juan, La Union, or Sebay, La Union. Once there in La Union, you can get to your destination by riding a jeepney or tricycle. Be sure to prepare enough budget for the fare as bus tickets cost around Php 400.00 to Php 600.00 pesos from Manila. But if you are planning to bring a private vehicle, take the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway or TPLEX to get there in less time.

When in La Union?

The ber months are here, meaning it’s also almost the North Swell Season or the Surf Season. This season is known as the north swell because it is the time when amihan winds (northeast trade winds) consistently produce swells up to 2-3 meters needed for surfing. This season’s best time to surf is from October to April

But if you’re booked for the year, you need not worry as you can always surf in the South Swell Season from July to September. This season is when the habagat or southwest monsoon also yields waves. But take note that these are also the rainy seasons, so be sure to prepare.
